Specimen 781: Feist's telephone directory
or: What kind of a thing is a database?

A discussion with Kobe Matthys (Agency), Jan Gerber (Pirate Cinema),
Sebastian Luetgert (Pirate Cinema), moderated by Andreas Broeckmann

In the 1991 US court case Feist Publications vs. Rural Telephone
Service Company, the conflict turned around the copyrighting of a
telephone directory. In legal terms, a database and any other form of
directory or listing is considered as a 'compilation'. The decision
of this particular court case has set the directions for the
copyrighting of databases and is therefore often quoted in current
cases.

Starting from this simple 'thing', the artist Kobe Matthys from
Brussels, currently in residence at TESLA, explores the grey zone
between 'quasi' objects (evolution of information) and subjects,
where the creation of 'artefacts' creates a specific legal framework.
Matthys is working on an extensive database about international and
historical legal cases concerning copyright legislation and will
discuss related issues with the artists and copyright experts Jan
Gerber and Sebastian Luetgert.

Agency presents things that witness the splitting of nature. These
are things that have been either classified as nature or culture,
that are quasi object or subject, that moved from evolution to
creation or the other way around.
Agency was founded in 1992 by Kobe Matthys. This association is based
on informal agency. As with all other associations, Agency is a
fictitious persona. Agency is located in Brussels, Europe.

- kosmologien, ontologien, taxonomien, klassifikationen, schlagwort ...
- beispiele, wie spezifische eigenheiten implementiert werden können
- quantitative arbeit, copyright-fragen von datenbanken
- archive, museen, publikationen, depots, register, datenbanken
