UMAS, United Media Artsist ein Künstlerkollektiv in Durham, Ontario,
zwei Stunden nordwestlich von Toronto, das sich dem Austausch
internationaler Medienkunst widmet und den Dialog zwischen
zeitgenössischen KünstlerInnen fördert. Gegründet 1983, betreibt UMAS
seit 1993 zudem ein „artist in residence“ Programm. Eine der
ProtagonistInnen des Kollektivs, Ilse Gassinger ist zudem Künstlerin,
Kuratorin und Leiterin der Durham Art Gallery. Wir haben sie eingeladen,
über UMAS zu berichten und das Austauschprogramm in einer Ausstellung zu
präsentieren.

UMAS is an artists’ collective in Durham, Ontario, two hours northwest
of Toronto, which dedicates itself to the exchange of international
media art and promotes dialogue between contemporary artists. Founded in
1983, UMAS has run an “artist in residence” programme since 1993. One of
the collective’s protagonists, Ilse Gassinger, is not only an artist but
also a curator and the director of the Durham Art Gallery. We have
invited her to report on the work of UMAS and to present the exchange
program.
