MJ Manifesta Journal, the international magazine for contemporary
curatorial practices, is organising a series of discussions related to
theoretical issues published in the journal. The discussions take place
in Sofia, Vilnius, Ljubljana, Moscow and Kiev in the course of 2004 and
the beginning of 2005.

MJ Manifesta Journal focuses on issues of curatorial work, its
strategies, conditions, dilemmas, and contexts. The aim of curatorial
reflection will be explored in the 2nd discussion on November 23, 2004
in collaboration with the CAC - Contemporary Art Centre- Vilnius, which
will be followed by a publication in MJ Manifesta Journal # 5.

The 2nd discussion Curators and Artists: Changing relations and
perspectives is open to the public.

The role and function of the curator within the field of contemporary
art has changed tremendously the past decade. The independence and
responsibility involved seem to have increased. The attention the
curator receives, as well as his or her identity have become an
important issue of discussion for artists and art professionals. The
traditional boundaries between those who create and those who mediate,
in terms of organisers, facilitators to collaborators in the creative
process with the artist, become increasingly difficult to define. In
fact, where does the work of artists end and where does that of curators
begin? What conditions have influenced this division of labour, of
roles, of responsibilities? Under what circumstances have the
distinctions between the two become blurred? Is curating a
meta-discourse or does it exist on the same level as an art practice?
What influence has institutional critique had on institutional practice?
Can an exhibition be an artwork? Should artists influence the structures
and processes of institutions? Why, when, how?
