DEAF04 Art Project “The Peoples’ Portrait” launched in New York

Media artist Zhang Ga launched the public art project “The Peoples'
Portrait” simultaneously in cities around the world on October 27th. Five
photo-capturing kiosks, including a location on Times Square in New York,
are set up globally to capture a diverse range of people in their unique
environments. Every few seconds, a central server will retrieve the
portraits and display them first in time stamped order, then randomly from
the archive. People can view the display in New York, Singapore, Linz,
Rotterdam, and Brisbane. In Rotterdam, you can participate in Zhang Ga's
art project during DEAF04, from 9 to 21 November in the Central Library of
Rotterdam (Hoogstraat 110) during opening hours.

Program changes in symposium “Feelings Are Always Local” (12-13 November)

Due to the cancellations of the lectures by Arjun Appadurai and Mike
Davis, the program of the DEAF04 symposium “Feelings Are Always Local”
(Friday 12 & Saturday 13 November) has changed. Instead, the Dutch
biologist and essayist Arjen Mulder will deliver a lecture on systems,
networks, interaction and communication, and their importance for the
arts.

Central question of the symposium is: How do local systems arise and
maintain themselves in large, globalizing networks? Other speakers are
biologist Tijs Goldschmidt (NL), economist Loretta Napoleoni (IT), artist
and computer programmer Alex Galloway (US) and others.

Californian band The Hub reunites at DEAF04

For the first time in ten years the members of the legendary Californian
band The Hub will all be playing together in a unique reunion concert for
DEAF04. The Hub may be considered as the predecessors of both connected
and laptop music. In the late eighties Chris Brown, Scot
Gresham-Lancaster, John Bischoff, Tim Perkis, Mark Trayle, and Phil Stone
- all hailing from California - formed an experimental computer music
group that toured almost all over the world. For the first time in ten
years they will all be playing together again. A unique event for DEAF04!
